On Thursday this week (Tomorrow), the ACT Legislative Assembly will be debating and voting on the Sexuality and Gender Identity Conversion Practices Bill 2020.
Federal Chairman, Glenn O’Rourke, of the Federation Party ACT said today “Labor and the Greens are preparing to vote into law this Thursday, hasty and irresponsible legislation, that reaches into the homes of every ACT parent and impairs the human rights of every ACT parent.”
We base this statement on the following:
- The definition of “sexuality or gender identity conversion” is so broad that it includes any practice conducted by a parent, teacher, religious or heath professional regarding a child or vulnerable person’s sexual orientation or gender.
- Clear legal advice has been published by the Human Rights Law Alliance, identifying the dangers of this legislation for parents, schools, teachers and religious communities. The proposed legislation puts their right to teach their children their beliefs and values without the risk of imprisonment in jeopardy.
- There are clear contradictions between the bills explanatory statement, and the actual text of the bill being proposed, leading to confusion in our community about what the bill actually does.
Glenn also stated that “Parents need support and resources to help their children as they grow up, not the threat of unnecessary criminal sanctions.”
“The Liberal Party must declare their opposition to this bill and vote against in in the assembly on Thursday. A choice not to oppose this bill would represent a failure on their part to support the human rights of parents.”
“We call upon all parties, to commit to delaying a vote on this legislation until after the October election, so the community can be fully informed and consulted about the bill, and so the bill can be significantly amended or rewritten, to provide the appropriate protection for parents as they seek to love, care for and raise their children in the privacy of their own homes.”
Glenn concluded by stating, “I would like to make clear that The Federation Party ACT does not in any way support or condone any “gay conversion” practices by anyone in the health or healing professions. We support the banning of any coercive or controlling gay conversion therapy and if one of our candidates were elected, we would support the original intent of this legislation, but with very significant amendments.”
